Texas Hold’em is a deceptively simple game to learn but a harder game to master. Many casual observers of the game consistently mange to become confused on the ranked cards in Texas hold’em poker. It doesn’t necessarily mean that if a player is dealt a strong combination of cards, that they will win the hand. A good bluffer has chased many a faint hearted player away with a hand that they would normally fold on. That is what makes Texas hold’em poker so interesting!

For those you who always wanted to know but were afraid to ask here is a list of ranked poker hands and the odds of them occurring, in ascending order.

High card

This is where you basically have nothing but a high card. When two players on the same table have just a high card, the one with the highest card wins.

The probability of this hand is around 1 to 2.

One pair

This is where you only have two cards of the same rank. When two players on the table have the same pair, the other three cards come into play, with the highest card winning

The probability of this hand is 2.4 to 1.

Two pairs

Two pairs are where you have two cards of one rank and two cards of another. If there are two players on the table with two pairs the highest ranking pair wins. If both players have the same highest ranking pair, the highest second ranking pair wins. If both players have the same set of two pairs, it is the one with the highest odd card that wins.

The probability of this hand is 21 to 1

Three of a kind

Three of a kind is where you have three cards of the same rank. The highest rank of all three of a kind is three aces.

The probability of this hand is 470 to 1

 

Straight Run

A straight run is where you have five cards from different suites in sequential order. The highest ranking card in the straight depicts its value.

The probability of this hand is 255 to 1.

Flush

A flush is where you have five cards of the same suit but not in a sequential order. The highest ranking card in the flush depicts the value.

The probability of this hand is 509 to 1.

Full house

A full house is where you have three cards of one rank or number and two cards of another rank is called a “full house”. The higher the rank of these two sets, the higher the value.

The probability of this hand is 644 to 1.

Four of a kind

Three of a kind is where you have four cards of the same rank. The highest rank of all four of a kind is four aces.

The probability of this hand is 4,165 to 1

A straight flush.

Second best hand in Texas hold’em poker.

The odds of being dealt this hand are 45,000 to 1.

A royal flush

This is the best hand you can obtain. It is a straight flush with the lowest card being a 10.

The odds of being dealt this hand are 65,000 to 1.

You don’t see a royal flush every day of the week in Texas hold’em poker, so if you get dealt one, enjoy the moment!
